Robert Witton is a Professor of Community Dentistry at Peninsula Dental School, University of Plymouth, and Chief Executive of Peninsula Dental Social Enterprise CIC. He is a General Dental Council-registered specialist in Dental Public Health and holds leadership roles in education, clinical services, and policy. His career spans military service (Royal Army Dental Corps), primary care dentistry, and academic leadership.
Education and Training: Completed a short service commission in the Royal Army Dental Corps, practiced primary care dentistry for 10 years, and pursued higher specialty training in Dental Public Health, culminating in a CCST. He became a substantive faculty member in 2012.
Research and Interests: Focuses on improving population oral health, dental education, and equitable access to care. Key areas include migrant oral health, inter-professional education, and the intersection of public health with policy. He champions global oral health initiatives through collaborations like the FDI’s Oral Health Advocacy Guide for refugees.
Professional Roles:
- Chair of the British Dental Association Dental Public Health Committee
- Training Programme Director for Dental Public Health in Southwest England, Oxford, and Thames Valley
- Advisor to international organizations such as the Child Global Dental Fund
Advising and Leadership: Supervises multiple postgraduate research degrees (PhD, MSc) and leads clinical education via PDSE CIC, the dental school’s clinical placement provider. Holds clinical leadership roles through Health Education England and NIHR.
Global Contributions: Active in international dental education and public health programs, including alumni networks from Harvard/KCL Senior Dental Leaders Programme.
