Robert Warren Howarth is the David R. Atkinson Professor of Ecology and Environmental Biology at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a B.A. from Amherst College. His research focuses on biogeochemical cycles, climate change impacts, and energy systems, particularly methane emissions from natural gas and shale gas extraction. He advises on New York’s climate policy and chairs the NY Climate Action Council. His lab studies coastal and freshwater ecosystems, emphasizing nitrogen cycles and sustainability.
