معرفی
Virginia Rich is a Professor and Director of the EMERGE Biology Integration Institute at The Ohio State University, within the Department of Microbiology. Her research focuses on Global Change Microbiology, Microbial Meta-omics, and Genes-to-Ecosystems inquiry, with emphasis on permafrost thaw, methane dynamics, and climate feedback mechanisms. She earned a B.A. from UC Berkeley (1998), a Ph.D. from MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (2008), and completed a postdoc at the University of Arizona (2008-2011).
Research interests include microbial responses to environmental change, viral and microbial interactions in thawing permafrost, and microbial contributions to global carbon cycles. Her work bridges genomic analysis with ecosystem-level processes, addressing climate change impacts through studies of Arctic lakes, permafrost dynamics, and ancient microbial archives in glaciers. Key publications explore microbiome assembly in thawing environments, genome-centric carbon processing, and methane emission sensitivity.
Publications span high-impact journals like Cell, Nature Reviews Microbiology, and Nature Communications. She collaborates widely on interdisciplinary projects, including the Scientists' Warning to Humanity initiative on microbes and climate change. No awards or formal advisees are listed in provided texts, but her leadership role in EMERGE reflects significant professional impact.
