Robert Stretter is an Associate Professor of English at Providence University, specializing in Medieval and Renaissance literature. He earned his Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Virginia, focusing on conflicts of interest in friendship and love in medieval and Renaissance English literature. His M.A. in English Literature and Medieval Studies, also from the University of Virginia, and a B.A. in English & French (Honors) from Pacific Union College, class of 1995.

Dr. Stretter’s research explores themes of friendship, love, and social obligation in medieval and Renaissance texts, particularly works by Chaucer and Shakespeare. His scholarly contributions include analyses of dramatic literature, encyclopedic entries on Renaissance figures, and studies of sworn brotherhood dynamics in medieval romances.
His grant project Other Selves: Theorizing Friendship from Chaucer to Shakespeare (2016–2017), funded by the Committee on Aid to Faculty Research, underscores his focus on literary representations of interpersonal relationships. With an h-index of 19, his work bridges historical literary analysis and contemporary theoretical frameworks.
