Nancy Atkinson

Nancy Atkinson, Ph.D., is a Professor of English at the University of Northern Alabama (UNA), affiliated with the Department of English within the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. Her research focuses on Medieval and Renaissance Literature, The Bible as Literature, Anglo-Saxon saint stories, sermon literature, Gay and Lesbian literature, and Women's studies. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pittsburgh (1997), preceded by an M.A. in English (1991) and an M.Ed. in Humanities Education (1987).

Her research explores intersections between medieval religious texts and contemporary cultural narratives. She has presented at over 24 national/international conferences, including the International Congress on Medieval Studies and the Shakespeare Association of America. Her current book project examines early medieval and modern women’s miracle stories and sacred places, focusing on saints like Winifred, Frideswide, and Margaret Clitherow.

Dr. Atkinson teaches a wide range of courses, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, World Literature, and specialized seminars like 'The Medieval Imagination' and 'The Sacred Feminine.'
