Robert Smith is Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations, with appointments in the Department of Labor Economics. He holds a PhD in Economics from Stanford University and has taught at the University of Connecticut while also serving as an economist at the U.S. Department of Labor.
Smith's research examines labor market policies, particularly occupational safety regulations, workers' compensation systems, and pension funding. He is co-author of the leading textbook Modern Labor Economics: Theory and Public Policy, now in its 12th edition. His empirical analyses have influenced policy discussions on OSHA effectiveness and workplace safety incentives.
Recent publications investigate regulatory compliance costs, comparable worth policies, and pension system designs. Smith has extensively analyzed how firm size affects regulatory burdens and how inspection strategies impact workplace injury reporting.
