Robert Stewart Smith is a Professor in the Department of Labor Economics at Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR). He held the role of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for 28 years and has served as Interim Dean four times. With a Ph.D. from Stanford University (1971), his career includes teaching at the University of Connecticut and roles in the U.S. Department of Labor before joining Cornell in 1974.
His research focuses on labor market policies, particularly occupational safety and health, workers' compensation, and public policy analysis. He co-authored the seminal textbook Modern Labor Economics: Theory and Public Policy, now in its 12th edition. Awards include the General Mills Foundation Award (1999), Robert N. Stern Mentoring Award (2006), and Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellows teaching award (2010).
Smith teaches core labor economics courses for undergraduates and master’s students. His publications span policy evaluations (e.g., NYS Workers’ Compensation programs) and regulatory analyses (e.g., OSHA Act impacts).
