Michael Bognanno is a Professor of Economics and Department Chair at Temple University's College of Liberal Arts. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1990 and has been at Temple since then, serving as Chair of the Economics Department and Director of Economics and Business at Temple University Japan. Prior to Temple, he worked as a compensation consultant for DCA Stanton, Industrial Relations Specialist for the U.S. Department of Labor, and Economist for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He is also a Research Fellow at IZA (Institute of Labor Economics) since June 2004.
His research focuses on labor economics and personnel economics, particularly examining compensation structures, promotion systems, tournament incentives in workplace settings, executive pay, job displacement penalties, and hierarchical structures in organizations. His work often analyzes how incentives affect worker behavior and career progression within corporate environments.
Bognanno's publications span from the 1990s through the late 2010s, with his most recent work focusing on topics like efficient markets and CEO compensation, high-powered performance pay and its effects on non-monetary motivation, and promotion determinants in corporate hierarchies. His research has appeared in prestigious journals including the Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy, Management Science, and Japan and the World Economy.
Bognanno has been recognized as an expert commentator on labor market conditions, having been interviewed by WHYY-FM about the Philadelphia-area job market in June 2023 and featured in WalletHub articles regarding state unemployment rates and hiring challenges in 2022.
