Dr. Robert S. Young is a Professor in the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resources at the College of Arts and Sciences, Western Carolina University. He serves as Director of the Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines. His research focuses on coastal processes, environmental restoration, and Holocene landscape evolution in the southern Appalachians.
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Geology from Duke University (1995)
- M.S. in Quaternary Studies from the University of Maine (1990)
- B.S. in Geology from the College of William and Mary (1987)
His current research examines carbon dynamics in coastal wetlands, post-hurricane geological impacts, and long-term landscape changes. Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to coastal zone management and environmental history.
The Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines, under his leadership, addresses coastal resilience and sustainable development through field studies and policy analysis.
