Robert Remez is a Professor of Psychology at Barnard College since 1980, affiliated with the Department of Neuroscience & Behavior, Psychology. His work bridges perception, cognition, and language, focusing on how listeners process speech amid environmental noise and identify speaker-specific characteristics. Research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD).
Research Focus: Dr. Remez investigates speech perception and talker identification, exploring how auditory systems organize and interpret complex soundscapes. His studies on perceptual organization and indexical properties in speech have implications for cognitive science, linguistics, and auditory neuroscience.
Academic Leadership: He currently chairs the Advisory Committee of the Columbia University Seminars and has served as a visiting scholar at the Parmly Hearing Institute (2006-2007) and former Board Member at Haskins Laboratories.
