Sung-Joo Lim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Binghamton University. Her research focuses on auditory cognitive neuroscience, investigating how dynamic brain functions support speech communication, attention, and memory. She employs multimodal neuroimaging techniques (EEG, fMRI), pupillometry, and computational modeling to explore speech perception, auditory attention, and category learning.
Education includes a BS and PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, followed by postdoctoral training at Boston University and the Max Planck Institute. Her work emphasizes neural dynamics underlying sound category learning and the interplay between auditory perception and higher-order cognition.
Key research themes include: 1) neural mechanisms of speech processing efficiency under varying conditions (e.g., background noise, talker variability), 2) dissociating energetic vs. informational masking effects using EEG/pupillometry, and 3) investigating how auditory expertise (e.g., musical training) influences neural coding.
She currently accepts graduate students for Fall 2024 and maintains active collaborations across cognitive neuroscience domains. Her lab's work bridges theoretical models from cognitive science with empirical neuroscientific methods, aiming to enhance understanding of human communication systems.
