Robert Malmsheimer

Dr. Robert Malmsheimer is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Forest Policy and Law at SUNY ESF, specializing in forest carbon accounting, biomass energy policies, and climate change mitigation strategies. He chairs key policy task forces, co-authored the 'Forests' chapter of the 3rd U.S. National Climate Assessment, and provided congressional testimony. His research focuses on U.S. climate policies, including New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

Education: Ph.D. in Forest Resource Management (SUNY ESF, 1999), J.D. (Albany Law School, 1989), and BLA in Landscape Architecture (SUNY ESF, 1986).

Research Interests: Climate policy impacts on forests, biomass energy sustainability, and implementation of aggressive climate laws. He leads initiatives at the Climate & Applied Forest Research Institute (CAFRI), Bioeconomy Development Institute (BDI), and Forest + Climate Visualization Partnership (FCVP).

Policy Engagement: Over 150 science-based briefings for policymakers, including presentations at the UK House of Commons. Awards include the Sir William Schlich Memorial Award and SUNY’s Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Teaching: Courses include Natural Resources Policy, Environmental Law, and Business Law. Known for high student ratings and practical policy focus.
