Robert Goodman is a Professor at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, with affiliations in the Department of Physiology, Pharmacology & Toxicology and the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. He has maintained a continuous faculty position since 1980.
Research Focus: His work centers on neuroendocrine mechanisms controlling gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion, particularly the role of KNDy neurons (kisspeptin/neurokinin B/dynorphin) in mediating ovarian steroid feedback. Key areas include seasonal breeding regulation, episodic GnRH secretion, and hypothalamic plasticity.
Scientific Contributions: Dr. Goodman has authored numerous studies on:
- KNDy neuron functionality in sheep models
- Estradiol's positive/negative feedback mechanisms
- Melatonin and thyroid hormone interactions in seasonal reproduction
- Endogenous opioid peptides' role in progesterone feedback
Awards:
- Benedum Distinguished Scholar (1992)
