Robert Falkner

Robert Falkner is Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where he also serves as the Academic Dean of the TRIUM Global Executive MBA programme, a collaboration between LSE, NYU Stern School of Business, and HEC Paris. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at Toronto University and serves on the editorial boards of 'Global Environmental Politics', 'Global Policy' and 'Earth System Governance'.

His research focuses on international political economy, global environmental politics, and international climate policy. Falkner has published extensively in these areas, with recent books including 'The Market in Global International Society: An English School Approach to International Political Economy' (2025, co-authored with Barry Buzan), 'Great Powers, Climate Change, and Global Environmental Responsibilities' (2022), and 'Environmentalism and Global International Society' (2021). His work explores the intersection of environmental values, international order, and global governance.

Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on the evolution of environmental norms in international society, the political economy of climate change, and the role of great powers in environmental governance. His work bridges theoretical frameworks from the English School of International Relations with practical concerns of global environmental politics.

Falkner has received research funding from numerous prestigious organizations including the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), European Commission, John D. and Catherine T. He previously served as Research Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at LSE (2017-22) and Academic Co-Director of the Dahrendorf Forum (2015-17).

His work addresses critical questions about the relationship between economic systems and environmental governance, the evolution of environmental stewardship as a norm in international society, and the political feasibility of different climate governance architectures.
