Kai Monheim

Kai Monheim is a Research Fellow at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and Director of the Centre for Multilateral Negotiations. His research examines how negotiation process management critically influences outcomes in multilateral environmental and trade agreements, beyond national interests.

His educational background includes a PhD in International Relations from LSE (2010-2013) supervised by Dr Robert Falkner, a Master in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School, and a law degree from Humboldt Universität Berlin.

Monheim's work centers on negotiation theory, demonstrating that procedural design determines success in complex regimes. His research spans climate change (UNFCCC/COP processes), trade negotiations, and biosafety protocols, revealing how structured dialogue overcomes positional barriers to foster cooperation.

His publications consistently identify negotiation process as the cross-cutting determinant of successful multilateral outcomes, exemplified by the Paris Agreement's achievement through deliberate process management across diverse governance contexts.
