Robert E. Buswell Jr. is a Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), specializing in East Asian Buddhism, particularly Korean Zen (Seon) traditions. He spent five years as a Zen monk at Songgwang-sa monastery in South Korea, blending scholarly research with firsthand monastic experience. His seminal work, The Zen Monastic Experience: Buddhist Practice in Contemporary Korea (1992), provides an insider’s account of Korean Zen monastic life, challenging Western stereotypes about Zen practices.
