Robert Doran is a Professor of French and Comparative Literature at the University of Rochester, with an affiliation in Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music. He holds dual PhDs from Stanford University and Sorbonne Nouvelle–Paris III. His research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century French literature, continental philosophy, aesthetics, and intellectual history. Doran is the author of influential works like The Theory of the Sublime from Longinus to Kant and The Ethics of Theory, and editor of volumes including Liszt and Virtuosity, which won the 2023 Alan Walker Triennial Book Award.
His teaching spans French literature, existentialism, and aesthetics, with courses on figures like Sartre, Heidegger, and Balzac. Doran’s recent projects explore the sublime in 19th-century France and French adaptations of Shakespeare. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary debates on post-9/11 cultural theory and the ethical dimensions of narrative and historiography.
