Dr. Robert Burrell serves as Professor and Chair in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Alberta, holding dual appointments in the Faculties of Engineering and Medicine & Dentistry. He holds the Sorensen Chair in Commercialization of Biomedical Technology and was a two-term Canada Research Chair in Nanostructured Biomaterials.
His educational background includes a BSc, MSc, and PhD. Research focuses on nanomaterials for medical applications, particularly wound care and antimicrobial technology development. He pioneered Acticoat™ wound dressings—the world's first therapeutic nanotechnology application—which revolutionized burn and chronic wound treatment globally.
