Kevin Hewitt is a Professor at the Department of Physics & Atmospheric Science of Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Science, holding the NSERC Chair for Inclusion in Science and Engineering. His work bridges physics, biomedical engineering, and nanotechnology through advanced molecular imaging techniques.
- Research focuses on bionanophotonics, plasmonics, and Raman spectroscopy for cancer diagnostics
- Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2023) and Harry Jerome Award (2014)
- Secured $3.6M in research funding and $2M for science outreach initiatives since 2001
- Appointed Visiting Professor at Stanford University and the BC Cancer Agency
His lab develops gold- and silver-based nanoprobes targeting EGFR for cancer imaging, exploring nanoparticle aggregation in cellular environments and surface-sensitive Raman spectroscopy of biological structures. The articles highlight interdisciplinary applications in biomedical diagnostics and biophysics.
Scientific Awards:
- Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (2023)
- Rosemary Gill Award (2021)
- Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Science Promotion Award (2021)
- Nova Scotia Discovery Centre Science Champion (2018)
- Harry Jerome Award for Professional Excellence (2014)
- Multiple scholarships (1990-2001)
Hewitt actively reviews grants for CFI, NSERC, and CIHR, and serves as referee for journals including the Journal of Biomedical Optics and Optics Express. He is a board member of the Nova Scotia Institute of Science, Canadian Association of Physicists, and American Physical Society – Committee on Minorities in Physics.
