Robert Bryson-Richardson is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University. He holds a PhD in Human Genetics from the University of Nottingham and has conducted postdoctoral research at institutions including the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and the Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute. His research focuses on neuromuscular diseases, particularly myopathies and neuropathies, utilizing zebrafish as a model system to identify disease mechanisms and potential therapies. Key areas include the genetic basis of neuromuscular disorders, mitochondrial dysfunction in muscle weakness, and the application of CRISPR-Cas9 technology for mutagenesis studies. He leads or collaborates on multiple projects, including the development of diagnostic pipelines for muscle diseases and investigations into alcohol-induced heart disease.
Education: PhD in Human Genetics (University of Nottingham, 2003), followed by postdoctoral roles at the Medical Research Council’s Human Genetics Unit (Edinburgh) and the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute (Sydney).
Research interests span neuromuscular disease mechanisms, zebrafish models for genetic disorders, and translational therapies. His lab’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being). Notable contributions include identifying metformin as a potential treatment for myofibrillar myopathies and elucidating roles of genes like TNNI1 and HMGCS1 in disease.
Advising and grants: Chief Investigator on projects such as 'Testing of a VUS in distal myopathy and neuropathy' (2024–2026) and 'Establishment of a comprehensive rhabdomyolysis genetic diagnostic pipeline' (2023–2027). His lab website is bryson-richardsonlab.org.
