Robert B. Dunbar

Robert B. Dunbar is the W.M. Keck Professor in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences at Stanford University, with a focus on Environmental Earth System Science. He holds additional roles as a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment and Director of the Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Lab. Dunbar earned his Ph.D. in Oceanography from UC San Diego (1981) and B.S. in Geology from UT Austin (1975).

His research spans climate dynamics, oceanography, marine ecology, and biogeochemistry, with a focus on air-sea interactions, polar climate systems, and coral reef ecosystems. Dunbar has led major academic initiatives, including founding the Emmett Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER) and directing Stanford’s Earth Systems Program. He is recognized for contributions to undergraduate education, receiving the J. Frederick and Elisabeth B. Weintz University Fellow award.

Recent studies include Antarctic ice melt estimation via isotopic analysis, coral reef metabolism in Palmyra Atoll, and biogeochemical processes in kelp forests. He has authored over 200 publications, with recent work emphasizing Southern Ocean isoscapes, glacial meltwater dynamics, and micronutrient influences on phytoplankton productivity.

Key honors include the William M. Keck Professorship (2008) and leadership roles in global ocean science initiatives like the Consortium for Ocean Leadership and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences Board on Atmospheric Science and Climate. Dunbar’s fieldwork spans Antarctica, tropical Pacific reefs, and Patagonia, with a focus on integrating earth systems science for environmental policy.
