Rob Dunbar is the W.M. Keck Professor of Earth Science and Professor of Environmental Earth System Science at Stanford University's Doerr School of Sustainability. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment. His research focuses on climate dynamics, oceanography, marine ecology, and biogeochemistry, with a strong emphasis on Antarctic climate systems, coral reef ecosystems, and environmental policy.
Education: Ph.D. in Oceanography (University of California, San Diego, 1981); B.S. in Geology (University of Texas, Austin, 1975).
Research Interests: Dr. Dunbar studies global environmental change, air-sea interactions, tropical marine ecosystems, polar climate, and biogeochemical cycles. He leads projects on Antarctic ice melt estimation, coral reef metabolism, and the impact of environmental policies on coastal systems. His work integrates field studies, isotopic analyses, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Key Projects: Director of the Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Lab (SIBL); founding director of the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (E-IPER); member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences' Board on Atmospheric Science and Climate. He has pioneered methods to quantify ice sheet melt using isotopic signatures and contributed to the Chagos Archipelago Marine Protected Area research.
Awards: Keck Professorship (2008), Weintz University Fellow (2003–2013), Sant Director of Earth Systems Program (2003–2012).
Grants & Advising: Extensive grants for Antarctic research, coral reef studies, and environmental policy. Advised numerous graduate students through E-IPER and Earth Systems programs.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Dunbar Lab at Stanford, collaborating with international partners on projects in Antarctica, the Pacific, and Patagonia. Key facilities include the SIBL and field stations in Palau, Palmyra Atoll, and the Ross Sea.
