Robert A. Moffitt is the Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Economics at Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts & Sciences, with a joint appointment at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He previously served as Professor of Economics at Brown University (1984-1995) and held visiting roles at the University of Wisconsin and University of Maryland. He earned his PhD in Economics from Brown University. His research focuses on labor economics, public economics, econometrics, and population dynamics with an emphasis on welfare programs, earnings instability, and family economics.
Major contributions include analyzing labor supply responses to welfare systems like AFDC, Medicaid, and Social Security Disability Insurance; documenting rising earnings volatility among low-skill workers; and modeling welfare stigma effects. He has held editorial roles at leading journals including the American Economic Review and Review of Economics and Statistics, and chaired the National Academy of Sciences Panel to Evaluate Welfare Reform.
Recipient of the 2024 Edward Lazear Prize and MERIT Award from NIH, he is a National Academy of Sciences member, Guggenheim Fellow, and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His work bridges academic research with policy analysis, particularly in tax and transfer systems.
