Michael Williams is a Krieger-Eisenhower Professor at Johns Hopkins University's Department of Philosophy within the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. He holds a PhD from Princeton University. His research focuses on epistemology (especially skepticism), philosophy of language, and the history of modern and analytic philosophy. He has authored seminal works like Groundless Belief, Unnatural Doubts, and Problems of Knowledge. Williams served as department chair (2001–2013) and held visiting positions at institutions including the University of Chicago and Oxford.
Williams has been awarded an NEH fellowship and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His work bridges historical and contemporary philosophy, addressing foundational questions about knowledge and language. Current projects include Curious Researches: Reflections on Skepticism Ancient and Modern.
