Robert Lieberman is the Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on American political development, race and politics, and democracy. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and previously served as JHU’s Provost (2013–2016), overseeing initiatives like the Bloomberg Distinguished Professorships and diversity initiatives. He has authored influential books including Four Threats: The Recurring Crises of American Democracy (2020) and Shifting the Color Line (1998), which won multiple awards. Lieberman has also held roles such as interim dean at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs and was a John G. Winant Visiting Professor at Oxford (2021). He co-convenes the American Democracy Collaborative and chairs APSA task forces. His work emphasizes historical and comparative analysis to address democratic challenges and racial inequality.
