Peter Achinstein is the Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University, specializing in philosophy of science and history of science. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from Harvard University. His research focuses on scientific explanation, methodology, and evidence, with significant contributions to understanding historical scientific debates such as the wave-particle duality of light and the discovery of the electron.
Achinstein has authored influential books including Particles and Waves (Lakatos Award winner), The Book of Evidence, and Speculation: Within and About Science. His work bridges philosophical analysis with historical case studies, examining methodological principles from figures like Newton and Maxwell. He has held prestigious fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, NEH, and NSF.
He has served as a visiting professor at MIT, Stanford, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. A festschrift, Philosophy of Science Matters, was published in 2011 to honor his contributions, featuring essays by former students and leading scholars. He co-founded and directed the Johns Hopkins Center for History and Philosophy of Science, furthering interdisciplinary research in the field.
