Robert A. Cohen is a Professor of Mathematics in the Math & Computer Science Department at Western Colorado University. He maintains an active role in both teaching and mathematical research while contributing to the academic community through departmental service.
Dr. Cohen earned his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2004 and completed his BA in Mathematics at Humboldt State University in 1996. His academic journey led him to Western where he has established himself as a dedicated educator and researcher.
His research focuses on Functional Analysis, Operator Algebras, and Classical Analysis, with additional expertise in applied mathematical fields including Actuarial Science, Data Analytics, and Mathematical Risk Analysis. Dr. Cohen has explored creative applications of mathematics such as fractal image design, which he has shared with middle-school math campers, Honors students, and undergraduate mathematics students, demonstrating his commitment to mathematical outreach across educational levels.
- NSF research grant supporting student research
- Nominated for regional teaching awards
- Nominated for national teaching awards
Dr. Cohen has mentored students through research projects funded by his NSF grant, providing them with paid research positions and opportunities to present at national conferences including one at Brigham Young University. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the boundless nature of mathematical knowledge, noting that one could spend "several lifetimes studying the subject and still not learn it all." He particularly enjoys introducing students to new mathematical concepts and sharing his enthusiasm for the discipline's endless possibilities for discovery.
Based in the Gunnison Valley, Dr. Cohen appreciates both the recreational opportunities and supportive academic community that make it an ideal environment for his work and personal life.
