Travis Hainsworth serves as an Assistant Teaching Professor at Western Colorado University within the Math & Computer Science Department and the Western-CU Boulder Engineering Partnership Program. His work bridges engineering theory with practical applications in robotics and automation.
Hainsworth's research focuses on bringing machines to life through robotics, artificial intelligence, and mechatronics. He specializes in soft robotics, particularly in developing bio-inspired untethered locomotion systems, electrohydraulic soft actuators, and multi-material 3D printing techniques for fluidic devices. His work explores how AI, control theory, and machine learning can augment human experiences through innovative robotic systems.
His notable achievements include the Best Application Paper Award at CASE 2021 for his work on pneumatic soft actuators. Hainsworth has presented his research at prestigious conferences including IEEE Robosoft, Science Advances, and Flex at Semicon West.
Hainsworth teaches several advanced courses including Intro to Robotics (CSCI-3302), Artificial Intelligence (CSCI-3205), Machine Learning (CSCI-4622), and System Dynamics (MCEN-4043). He values the collaborative environment at Western Colorado University, particularly appreciating the expertise of his fellow faculty members and the outdoor recreation opportunities in the Gunnison Valley.
