Rob van den Nieuwenhuijzen is a Dutch graphic designer and educator born in 1980, serving as Typography teacher and class coach for the Bachelor Graphic Design programme at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK), while also holding a visiting graphic designer position for the Master Artistic Research programme. He extends his academic engagement internationally as visiting faculty at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles and through guest lectures at Pratt Institute, Elisava, Sint Lucas, and multiple Dutch art academies.
His academic foundation includes:
- Communication Studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven
- Media & Culture at the University of Amsterdam
- Graphic Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague
Van den Nieuwenhuijzen's professional practice centers on typography and visual communication systems, demonstrated through his Amsterdam-based studio DRAWSWORDS which he founded in 2010. His work spans graphic identities, exhibition design, and editorial projects for major Dutch museums, cultural institutions, and publishers, reflecting a rigorous integration of theoretical frameworks with practical execution in contemporary design contexts.
His industry recognition includes jury appointments for the Dutch Design Awards (2013-2017), The Best Dutch Book Designs (2012), and the Art Directors Club the Netherlands (2016), highlighting his standing as a critical voice in Dutch design evaluation and discourse.
