Marieke Zwart is an active artist and educator at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), part of The Hague University of Applied Sciences, where she teaches Art and Drawing for the Bachelor Graphic Design programme. Affiliated specifically with Graphic Design studies, she collaborates with theory tutor Marjan Brandsma on the IST course "Making and Thinking", providing hands-on artistic guidance while Brandsma handles theoretical aspects.
Education:
- BA in Fine Arts, Gerrit Rietveld Academy (2009)
- MA in Artistic Research, KABK (2015)
- Residency, Rijksakademie (2017-2018)
Her research centers on socially engaged artistic practices exploring empowerment, independence, and the Dutch colonial past through drawing and installation. She examines personal narratives via collaborative frameworks, notably founding "Depend on me" (2021)—a research group uniting professional and non-professional artists in Amsterdam. Her work integrates community engagement, evidenced by residencies with mental health clients at Het Vijfde Seizoen (Den Dolder) and IBB (Curaçao), plus collaborations with Buurtzorg on Visiting Nurses initiatives across the Netherlands.
Zwart co-founded summer schools for young artists in Amsterdam/Utrecht with Dirk van Lieshout and Het Vijfde Seizoen, demonstrating commitment to pedagogical innovation beyond standard curriculum. Her artistic output is held in Stadsarchief Amsterdam and Buurtzorg Nederland collections, with international exhibitions spanning 1646 (The Hague), Museum Dr. Guislain (Ghent), Kunsthal (Rotterdam), and 3331 Arts Chiyoda (Tokyo).
