Rob Heywood is a Professor of Medical Law at the University of East Anglia (UEA) School of Law, where he previously served as Deputy Head. He is co-author of the acclaimed textbook *Medicine, Patients and the Law* and editor of the *Medical Law Review*. His expertise spans clinical negligence, informed consent, mental capacity, and end-of-life decision-making. Heywood holds a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University (2006) and an LLB (2002), with a PG Cert in Higher Education from UEA (2010).
He leads a Nuffield Foundation-funded project (2018–2023) on ethical research inclusion for capacity-impaired adults, collaborating with UEA’s Health Sciences department. Awards include UEA’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2010) for his work on Medical Law, Company Law, and Sports Law modules. His research has been cited internationally, including by Singapore’s highest court. Heywood serves on editorial boards for major journals and chairs UEA’s Social Work and Law Ethics Committee.
Teaching focuses on Medical Law, Torts, and Sports Law. He advises students actively and collaborates on projects addressing deprivation of liberty safeguards and mental capacity law reforms. Beyond academia, he enjoys sports and supports Manchester United.
