Rina Agarwala is a Professor of Sociology at Johns Hopkins University and currently serves as Director of Graduate Studies (DGS). She holds affiliations with the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Sociology. Her research focuses on international development, gender, labor migration, and South Asian politics.

Research interests include the intersection of globalization and labor markets, migration regimes, and class dynamics in Indian emigration. Her award-winning work examines how economic structures shape migration patterns and political responses in India. Recent scholarship traces historical Indian emigration to the Middle East and U.S. through a class-based lens.
Professional experience includes roles at the United Nations Development Program (China), Self-Employed Women’s Association (India), and Women’s World Banking (New York). She has authored/co-edited multiple books analyzing development policy, labor movements, and social inequality.
