Rina Verma Williams is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean for the Social Sciences in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Cincinnati. She holds affiliate appointments in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Sociology, and Asian Studies. Her research focuses on South Asian politics, gender, ethnicity, nationalism, and the intersection of religion and politics in developing nations. Williams earned her Ph.D. and A.M. in Political Science from Harvard University and dual B.A. (Political Science) and B.S. (Chemistry) degrees from the University of California, Irvine.
Her academic career includes roles at the University of Virginia, University of Houston, and Prairie View A&M University. She has held leadership positions such as Interim Director of Studies in Women and Gender (University of Virginia) and Associate Director of the Center for South Asian Studies (University of Virginia). Williams has secured grants totaling over $100,000 for projects like oral histories of women in political science and interdisciplinary research initiatives. She has also served on numerous university committees, including the Faculty Senate and University Research Council.
Her scholarly contributions include the book Postcolonial Politics and Personal Laws: Colonial Legal Legacies and the Indian State (Oxford University Press, 2006) and articles in journals such as Politics, Religion and Ideology and Gender & History. Her work examines colonial legal frameworks, gender dynamics in political movements, and the role of religion in shaping modern Indian state policies.
