Rikke Luther

Rikke Luther is a Professor and Affiliate at MIT's Art, Culture, and Technology program (School of Architecture + Planning), with a parallel affiliation at the University of Copenhagen. Her work bridges artistic practice and academic research, focusing on environmental crises, climate change, and their socio-political implications. She holds a PhD from MIT and Copenhagen University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Copenhagen's ROCS (Ocean, Climate, and Society) center. Her research examines material aesthetics (concrete, mud) through interdisciplinary lenses, combining art, science, and socio-economic analysis. Key outputs include films, exhibitions, and books such as Mud … and the Earth System (2025) and Concrete Aesthetics (2025). She collaborates with institutions like the Globe Institute and ROCS, exploring intersections between art, climate science, and deep-time geology.

Educational background includes the Royal Danish Art Academy (1991–1998) and MIT (ACT program). Her career spans international exhibitions (Venice Biennale, CPH:DOX) and guest lectures. Current projects include investigating mud dynamics in the Arctic and their implications for Earth system stability.
