Rikke Luther is a Professor and Affiliate at MIT's Art, Culture, and Technology program (School of Architecture + Planning), with a parallel affiliation at the University of Copenhagen. Her work bridges artistic practice and academic research, focusing on environmental crises, climate change, and their socio-political implications. She holds a PhD from MIT and Copenhagen University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Copenhagen's ROCS (Ocean, Climate, and Society) center. Her research examines material aesthetics (concrete, mud) through interdisciplinary lenses, combining art, science, and socio-economic analysis. Key outputs include films, exhibitions, and books such as Mud … and the Earth System (2025) and Concrete Aesthetics (2025). She collaborates with institutions like the Globe Institute and ROCS, exploring intersections between art, climate science, and deep-time geology.
Educational background includes the Royal Danish Art Academy (1991–1998) and MIT (ACT program). Her career spans international exhibitions (Venice Biennale, CPH:DOX) and guest lectures. Current projects include investigating mud dynamics in the Arctic and their implications for Earth system stability. She is also preparing works for MIT's 50th anniversary exhibition curated by Laura Knott and others.
