Orkan Telhan is an Associate Professor of Fine Arts – Emerging Design Practices at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design. He holds a PhD in Design and Computation from MIT’s Department of Architecture and studied Media Arts at SUNY Buffalo. Telhan is a fellow at MIT’s Art, Culture, and Technology Program and serves as president of the Biodesign Challenge, an initiative fostering interdisciplinary biotechnology education. His work bridges art, design, and science to address socio-cultural and environmental issues.
Research Interests: Telhan’s practice focuses on critical issues in cultural, environmental, and social responsibility. His interdisciplinary projects explore emergent technologies like biodesign, synthetic biology, and sustainable materials, often through collaborative exhibitions and public installations. Key themes include the ethical implications of technology, climate crisis interventions, and the intersection of art with scientific inquiry.
Affiliations & Roles: Beyond academia, Telhan has been affiliated with MIT’s Media Lab (Sociable Media Group) and Design Laboratory. His work has been exhibited globally, including at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Istanbul Biennial, and institutions like the Walker Art Center and London Design Museum. He actively promotes public engagement through initiatives like the Biodesign Challenge, fostering dialogue between artists, scientists, and communities.
