Riki Lane is a Research Fellow at Monash University's Department of General Practice since 2011. Their work focuses on qualitative and ethnographic research in primary health care, including collaborations with North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network to enhance research capacity. They also serve as a Project/Research Worker at Monash Health Gender Clinic, specializing in trans and gender diverse health. Riki holds a PhD from La Trobe University (2011), exploring the social implications of 'brain-sex' theories of transsexuality through qualitative interviews with clinicians and advocates.
Education: PhD in Sociology of Health from La Trobe University (2011). Research interests include sociology of health, gender studies, and qualitative methodologies. Their work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being (SDG 3) and gender equality (SDG 5).
Key projects include ARCTYC (Australian Research Consortium for Trans Youth and Children, 2024–2028), evaluating primary health networks, and studying eHealth integration in super clinics. They have supervised higher-degree students and contributed to policy advisory roles, including membership in Victoria’s Department of Health advisory panel since 2015.
Riki’s research emphasizes healthcare equity for LGBTQIA+ communities, primary care resilience during crises (e.g., pandemic leadership studies), and improving electronic medical record inclusivity for gender-diverse patients. Their work bridges clinical practice, sociological theory, and policy advocacy to address systemic gaps in healthcare access and quality.
