Rik Mellenbergh is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Private Law. He holds positions in the Corporate Law Department and the Kooijmans Institute. His roles include coordinating the International Business Law Master Programme (2013–2020) and teaching courses on Property Law, Corporate Finance, and Insolvency Law. He has authored influential textbooks like Entreeboek Ondernemingsrecht and Krediet financiering van bedrijfsovernames.
Education: Studied law at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), with exchange studies at Tulane Law School (USA). PhD (2009) on corporate takeovers and environmental law, supported by Fulbright and NWO grants, with visiting research at NYU, UC Berkeley, and UPenn Law Schools.
Research focuses on intersections of company law, financial law, property law, and environmental liability. Key areas include director liability, corporate acquisitions, financing mechanisms, and environmental legal obligations in transactions. His work bridges regulatory frameworks across jurisdictions.
Publications span 55+ outputs, including articles in Oxford Journal of Environmental Law and European Company Law Journal, plus textbooks widely used in Dutch legal education. Awards include Fulbright and NWO grants (2006).
