Riitta Freese is a Senior Lecturer in Human Nutrition and Director of the Master’s Programme for Human Nutrition and Food-related Behaviour at the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Department of Food and Nutrition. Her expertise spans nutrition science, global dietary patterns, and public health policy. She holds a Docent title and has extensive international collaboration experience, particularly in Mozambique and Kenya.
Research Interests:
- Global dietary patterns and their health/environmental impacts
- Nutrient adequacy and deficiency prevention
- Plant-based diets in children and adolescents
- Food systems sustainability
- Micronutrient requirements and recommendations

- Empowering Tomorrow’s Food Security Leaders (2024–2026): Enhancing higher education capacity in Kenya/Mozambique
- A Finnish-Mozambican Collaboration (2022–2024): Strengthening food/nutrition sciences education
