Rafael Uaiene is an Assistant Professor in International Development at the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics, Michigan State University (MSU), affiliated with the Food Security Group. Prior to joining MSU in 2012, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a Researcher (Cotton Breeder) and National Director at Mozambique's National Agronomic Research Institute (INIA), and as a lecturer and Deputy Director/Director of the Instituto Agrario de Chimoio.

His research focuses on agricultural productivity, economic analysis of production technologies, policy formulation, and technology transfer in low-income countries, particularly Mozambique. He examines how policy, market institutions, and technology interact to foster rural economic growth and specializes in human and organizational capacity building within agricultural systems.
Rafael's recent publications and presentations emphasize food security, policy analysis, and agricultural research systems. Notable works include CGE modeling for Mozambique's biofuels policy, farm household efficiency studies, and Bt cotton adoption impacts in West Africa.
Rafael Uaiene has contributed to international collaborations such as the MSU-IFPRI Workshop and partnerships with Mozambique's Ministry of Planning and Development. His outreach efforts target agricultural policy, market institutions, and extension systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
