Prof. Rick van der Ploeg is the University Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Amsterdam (since 2020) and holds a concurrent chair as Economics Professor and Research Director of the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies (OXCARRE) at Oxford University. He has also served at the VU Amsterdam, London School of Economics, European University Institute, Tilburg University, and as a Visiting Professor at Utrecht University. His work bridges environmental, political, and economic disciplines to address global challenges like climate change and resource scarcity.
Education: PhD in Engineering from the University of Cambridge (mentored by Nobel laureates Richard Stone and James Meade). Research focuses on environmental economics, macroeconomics, and resource management, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration across natural sciences and social sciences.
Political and advisory roles include Dutch Parliament Member (PvdA), Under-Secretary of State for Culture and Media (Kok II Cabinet), and advisor to institutions like the IMF, World Bank, and African/Asian Development Banks. He advocates for systemic economic transitions to achieve sustainability and equity.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies (OXCARRE) and serves as a bridging figure between faculties at the UvA, particularly in environmental and economic research initiatives.
