Rick Monture is a Professor in the Department of English & Cultural Studies at McMaster University's Faculty of Humanities, where he also contributes to the Indigenous Studies Program. He is additionally a community scholar at Six Nations Polytechnic and a lifelong resident of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, member of the Mohawk nation, Turtle clan.
Monture's educational background includes:
- PhD in English and Cultural Studies from McMaster University (2010)
- M.A. in English from McMaster University (1996)
- B.A., Honours, in History and English from McMaster University (1991)
Rick Monture's research spans 20th century American literature (Faulkner, Beats, Counterculture), Indigenous literatures of North America (oral and written), popular music (Bob Dylan, Grateful Dead, Punk), Indigenous intellectual traditions, and Indigenous activism including visual sovereignty and Land Back movements. His scholarship bridges literary analysis with cultural and political engagement, particularly concerning Haudenosaunee communities and Indigenous sovereignty.
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on Indigenous literary traditions and resistance narratives, spanning from historical analyses of early colonial periods through to contemporary Indigenous writing, with particular attention to Six Nations of the Grand River and Haudenosaunee intellectual traditions.
Monture has received notable recognition:
- McMaster's 2021 Indigenous Scholar-in-Community fellowship ($25,000)
As an academic advisor, Monture welcomes graduate supervisees in 19th and 20th-century American literature, Indigenous writing and resilience, music and pop culture criticism, environmental activism, and Indigenous intellectual traditions. His current research includes a partnership with the Woodland Cultural Centre to document cultural wisdom of remaining first language speakers of Cayuga and Onondaga at Six Nations.
Monture is deeply involved in language preservation efforts, working to record and document knowledge of fluent speakers to sustain Haudenosaunee languages for future generations, positioning the Woodland Cultural Centre as a central resource for Haudenosaunee language retention across multiple communities.
