Rick Flowers is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Since 2008, he has led Adult Education and Postgraduate Programs, overseeing courses in popular education, social change, adult literacy, TESOL, and Indigenous Studies. His academic career bridges research, teaching, and community engagement, focusing on the intersection of pedagogy with social justice, food studies, and digital platforms.
- Research Interests: Adult education, critical pedagogy, food pedagogies, community development, and the racialized, gendered, and classed dimensions of educational practices.
- Teaching Areas: Creativity, complexity studies, new media, sociological perspectives, and global problem-solving.
His funded research spans projects on food pedagogies, environmental education, and community leadership. Collaborating with Elaine Swan, he explores how food-related activities (e.g., ethnic tours) serve as public pedagogy, emphasizing intersectionality and methodological innovation like walking ethnography. His work has been cited in studies on multiculturalism, digital media, and social movements.
Rick has received grants for initiatives such as Modelling paradigm-shift for an age of climate change and Fostering gender-equitable teaching practices in South Asia. He has also led action research in Aboriginal community development and environmental advocacy, contributing to the Centre for Popular Education’s legacy (1999–2007). His service and leadership include editorial roles, conference organization, and media engagements on citizenship, race, and education.
