Doris Flowers is a Professor in the College of Education at San Francisco State University, serving as Co-coordinator of the Center for Adult Education and Equity and Social Justice Program. She previously held leadership roles including Interim Associate Dean for the Graduate College of Education (2021-2023), Chair of ELSIT (2015-2021), and Interim Chair for Africana Studies (2019-2020). Her academic background includes degrees from the University of the District of Columbia (BA/MS in Speech and Language Pathology) and a PhD in Education from the University of Virginia, with a focus on language and communication and a minor in neuroscience.
Her research emphasizes the intersectionality of race, class, language, and gender in adult education and work environments, with a focus on African Centered perspectives. She has contributed to adult education through publications, conferences, and initiatives like the 2003 Adult Education Research Conference. Dr. Flowers is actively involved in professional organizations, including the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education and the Adult Education Research Conference Steering Committee.
She co-founded 'Soul of San Francisco State' to celebrate the Black experience and address racial inequities, and launched 'Building Common Ground,' a student-focused initiative for critical dialogue. Over 25 years, her work bridges clinical speech-language pathology with educational equity, emphasizing marginalized communities' linguistic and cultural needs.
