Jim Crowther

Dr Jim Crowther serves as an Honorary Fellow at the Moray House School of Education and Sport, University of Edinburgh, where he actively contributes to teaching, research supervision, and editorial leadership as editor of the international journal Studies in the Education of Adults.

His academic credentials include:

• PhD focusing on adult learning in popular protests

Crowther's research centers on adult education's transformative role in advancing democracy and social justice through popular education frameworks. His work critically examines adult literacy, citizenship education, and policy politics within lifelong learning contexts, while pioneering studies on digital activism—particularly how social media and ICTs empower environmental justice movements and social inclusion initiatives. He bridges theoretical rigor with grassroots community engagement.

As a dedicated supervisor, Crowther mentors PhD candidates exploring de-industrialization's educational impacts in Northeast England, citizenship pedagogy in Malaysia, climate action learning, youth civic identity in Scotland/South Korea, and cooperative education models in Malta. His funded projects include environmental justice-ICT studies, adult literacy persistence research, and social capital measurement in community learning.

He coordinates the international Popular Education Network (PEN), fostering global academic collaboration on critical pedagogy and social movement learning.
