Richard S. Zack is a Professor of Entomology at Washington State University (WSU) within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. His research focuses on insect systematics, ecological interactions of insects in harsh or vanishing ecosystems, and applied pest management. Notable projects include biodiversity studies at the Hanford Nuclear Site and Palouse Prairie, and investigations into Pacific Northwest shore flies (Ephydridae), moths, and aquatic insects. He collaborates with USDA researchers on chemical ecology, particularly moth and wasp attractants.
Dr. Zack earned a PhD in Systematic Entomology from WSU (1982), with prior degrees from Kent State University (M.S., 1976) and Ohio State University (B.S., 1974). He teaches undergraduate courses like “Insects and People” and “Entomology and Human Health,” emphasizing cultural entomology and public engagement. His work bridges basic and applied research, with over 150 publications and significant contributions to taxonomic discoveries.
Recipient of numerous teaching awards, including the 2005 Distinguished Achievement Award in Teaching from the Entomological Society of America, Zack is recognized for fostering undergraduate research and innovative pedagogy. His research has expanded understanding of insect biodiversity in managed environments and agricultural systems.
