Richard Strauch is a Professor of Music at Whitworth University and second trombone in the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. He directs the Whitworth Wind Symphony and Chamber Winds, teaches music history courses, and leads the Power and Politics of Art study program in Rome/Florence/Vienna/Berlin during Jan Terms. Joined faculty in 1997.
Education: D.M.A., Yale University School of Music (Music); B.Mus., Wheaton College Conservatory of Music.
Research interests focus on conducting methodologies, music historiography, and trombone performance techniques. His ensembles have toured internationally (Costa Rica, Thailand) and performed at NAfME and CBDNA conferences. Notable presentations include 'Passion Plays, Prebyterians, and Parsifal' (2012) and 'Putting the Rhythm Into the Wind' (2018).
Professional memberships include College Band Directors National Association, Society for Christian Scholarship in Music, and International Trombone Association. Prior roles include director of instrumental activities at Phillips University and assistant director at Yale University bands.
