Richard Stoelzel is an Associate Professor and Area Coordinator (Brass) at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University. He is renowned as an international soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer, with extensive experience in roles such as solo cornet with the United States Coast Guard Band and principal trumpet positions with orchestras like the Detroit Symphony and New Orleans Symphony. He has held teaching roles at institutions including Grand Valley State University and the Harid Conservatory, where he garnered acclaim for his trumpet studio. Stoelzel’s discography includes acclaimed recordings like Born to be Mild and A Mild Fantasie, and he has commissioned over 40 new works for trumpet. He is also a conductor and founder of ensembles such as the Avatar Brass and Aries Trio.
Research & Performance: His expertise spans brass performance, pedagogy, and orchestral playing. He has performed worldwide, including in China, where he earned the title of “Distinguished Visiting Professor” at the Shen Yang Conservatory.
