Dr. Richard Smith is a Senior Lecturer in GaN Materials and Devices at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Sheffield. He holds a BSc in Physics (2009) and a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (2014), both from the University of Sheffield. His research focuses on novel semiconductor materials and devices for optoelectronics, including LEDs, lasers, sensors, and displays. Key interests include additive manufacturing techniques, transfer printing processes, and hybrid organic/inorganic semiconductor systems. He leads the Centre for GaN Materials and Devices and contributes to the Joint Research Centre for Wide Bandgap Semiconductor Optoelectronics.
Research highlights include developing hybrid III-nitride/organic LEDs leveraging non-radiative energy transfer and investigating non-standard epitaxy processes like sputtering for III-nitride materials (AlN, AlInN, BN). Teaching responsibilities include module leadership for EEE6395 Compound Semiconductor Device Manufacture and contributions to EEE6216 Energy Efficient Semiconductors.
Professional roles include Admissions Tutor for the MSc in Semiconductor Photonics and Electronics and Department Laser Safety Officer. He currently supervises 9 PhD students in semiconductor materials and devices. His work bridges fundamental material science with applied optoelectronics, emphasizing scalable fabrication methods and high-efficiency device designs.
