Richard Salmon is a Senior Lecturer in Music Industry Management at London Metropolitan University’s London Metropolitan Business School, affiliated with the Guildhall School of Business and Law. He has taught there since 2005, combining academic expertise with a background as a barrister specializing in music and entertainment law. Previously, he worked in legal and business affairs at Tornado Entertainment Plc, negotiating digital distribution deals with major record labels like EMI and Sony/BMG. His teaching focuses on music industry management, entertainment law, event management, and business enterprise, alongside supervising undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations.
Research interests include music industry litigation, digital rights exploitation, and copyright law. He has presented at key conferences such as the LMBS Annual Conference on topics like digital licensing, royalty creation, and contractual constraints in music publishing. His work often bridges legal frameworks and practical business challenges in the evolving music sector.
Richard’s career spans legal practice, corporate negotiations, and academia, with a side passion as a musician previously signed to Virgin Records. He currently advises on music industry trends through his teaching and research, emphasizing the intersection of law, technology, and creative industries.
