Richard Rijnvos is Professor of Composition at Durham University where he has served since 2009, including as Head of Composition. His creative work focuses on large-scale compositional cycles exploring geographic and historical themes, with notable series including 'Grand Atlas' (depicting world continents in orchestral works) and 'Riflessi' (companion pieces to 20th-century classics).
His research integrates music composition with historical and political contexts, particularly examining Austro-German symphonic traditions and contemporary European music. Rijnvos has received major commissions from institutions including the Holland Festival and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, where he served as long-term composer-in-residence (2011-2017).
Honors include the Matthijs Vermeulen Prize (twice), Buma Toonzetters Award, and Le Prix du livre d'Histoire de l'Europe. His orchestral arrangements of works by Grieg, Stravinsky, and Villa-Lobos demonstrate scholarly engagement with historical repertoire through contemporary reinterpretation.
Rijnvos currently supervises doctoral researchers and has organized seminar series at Durham's Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies.
